Causes of alcohol allergy
Allergies caused truly by alcohol are very
rare. Alcohol allergy is mostly caused by the various components used in its
making. These components are the
potential allergens present in alcoholic beverages. These common allergens present
in alcohol are- grapes, yeast, rye, barley and wheat.
Alcohol intolerance is more common that its
allergy. When your digestive system is unable to break down the alcohol taken
it, it gives rise to alcohol intolerance. Mostly people think alcohol allergy
and alcohol intolerance are the same and therefore, use these terms inter
changeably.
In all allergies it is the immune system
that reacts with the allergen and due to this a reaction takes place. Same is
the case with alcohol allergy, when alcohol enters the body, the immune system
sees it as a threat to the body. To fight against it, the immune system
releases anti-bodies. This causes an allergic reaction. Alcohol allergy is a type1 or IgE mediated
allergy. IgE also known as immunoglobulin E is the anti-body released by immune
system to fight against alcohol.
Alcohol can also be related to histamine
intolerance. Histamine can be found in various foods and drinks including
alcohol drinks like wine and beer. Our body produces diamine oxidase (DAO) which
is an enzyme produced by the body to break down histamine present in food and
beverages. Histamine also occurs naturally in the body. Histamine intolerance
takes place when your body is not able to produce enough DAO to breakdown the
histamine that is present in your body. The excess histamine which is not
broken down reacts with your body.
Red wine is more potential to cause
histamine intolerance as it contains high levels of histamine. The symptoms of
histamine intolerance are somewhat same as an allergy and include- redness of
skin, irritated and itchy skin, abdominal pain, cramps, hives, diarrhoea,
difficulty in breathing. People who suffer from eczema, histamine intolerance
can increase their problem.
If you observe any symptoms after the
consumption of alcohol it becomes necessary to get diagnosed to determine the
cause and type of allergy. Proper diagnosis also helps the doctor to determine
whether the symptoms arise due to alcohol allergy or alcohol intolerance. Once
it is determined the doctors can easily proceed with medications. The best way
to avoid any of the both conditions is to simply avoid alcohol or anything that
contains alcohol.
